Over the past 20 years, the United States and other developed countries have strayed from adequately supporting the energy needs of their citizens. Specifically, these countries, who should be leading the way have abandoned investment in core energy markets and in doing so, have adversely affected innovation that is impacting our ability to accelerate production of new energy.

This underinvestment has led to a significant decline in innovation by leading energy companies, a spike in energy prices, increased inflation, a fragile energy grid, and a renewable energy market that, despite government subsidies, is not ready to meet the needs of its citizens.

I contend that this investment lag is also hurting the individual investors that have concentrated on the energy market – whether with individual stock, ETFs, mutual funds or pension plans. The demonization of hydrocarbons eliminated gains and dividends and potentially the development of new technology that could change the conversation.

A recent article published in OilPrice drills down into how three years ago, Big Oil supermajors in Europe pivoted from their core business to a greater diversification into all things non-hydrocarbons (i.e. wind, solar, etc). The strategy was meant to capture a portion of the emerging ESG investor sector, compete against pure-play transition players relying on government support and appease the activist calls for a shift away from oil and gas. Today these companies are reversing course by investing in hydrocarbons to ensure shareholder profit.

Energy, a basic commodity, is the cornerstone of advancing civilization, powering everything from daily activities to groundbreaking technological innovations. The delivery of abundant, reliable, and affordable energy drives economic growth, improves quality of life, and enables scientific progress.

I recently came across a transcript of an interview titled “The Case for Commodities: ‘Super-Backwardation,’ Structural Demand, and Inventory Shortages” with Jeff Currie from late 2022. At the time, the world was emerging from COVID, and Jeff was the Global Head of Commodities Research at Goldman Sachs. With great insight into the commodities market, Jeff anticipated a changing market, decades in the making, that was coming to fruition and contributing to the current shortage of supplies across key commodities, including oil.

Outlined here are a few key takeaways I gleaned from the full article:

Current Market Dynamics and Backwardation: Currie emphasizes that commodities are spot assets, meaning their prices reflect current supply and demand rather than future expectations. He notes that many commodity markets are in a state of "super-backwardation," where spot prices are significantly higher than future prices, indicating critically tight supply conditions across various commodities, including oil, metals, and grains.
Supply Constraints: Currie highlights ongoing supply constraints due to poor returns on commodity investments over the past decade, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) considerations diverting capital away from traditional energy investments, and logistical issues. He points out that even at current high prices, there has not been a significant increase in capital expenditure to boost supply, leading to persistent shortages.
Structural Demand and Policy Shifts: According to Currie, structural demand for commodities is being driven by policy shifts towards addressing income inequality, climate change, and deglobalization. These policies, he argues, are fostering increased demand from lower-income groups who are primary consumers of commodities.
Impact of Geopolitical Tensions: Currie acknowledges the potential impact of geopolitical tensions on commodity prices. At the time of the interview, Mr. Currie believed energy supply disruptions were unlikely due to mutual dependence. However, the Russia/Ukraine conflict has shut down Nord Stream 1 and delayed the activation of Nord Stream 2. This has placed Europe in a precarious position that has added a premium to commodity prices.
Investment Opportunities in Commodities: Currie is surprised by the lack of interest in commodity investments despite their potential as a hedge against inflation. He stresses that physical commodities, due to their intrinsic demand from actual consumers, provide a more reliable inflation hedge compared to financial assets. Currie believes that as the risks associated with decarbonization and supply constraints become more apparent, investment in commodities will likely increase.

Mr. Currie made an interesting point that ESG or Green investment had taken 99% of the roughly $300 billion in capital investment over the previous 12 months before this article. This has led to the massive underfunding that has “choked off” the capital that would have otherwise gone into old economy carbon-type investments, including drilling and mining, contributing to the shortages of key commodities we are seeing today.

Jump forward to present day, and the world has embraced something that Mr. Currie could not account for—Artificial Intelligence. And as the mainstream media is starting to realize, energy is the backbone of AI. Projections for U.S. electricity demand growth over the next five years have doubled from a year ago. According to a recent article, the major contributors include new artificial-intelligence data centers, federally subsidized manufacturing plants, and the electric-vehicle transition.

So, how will the energy market address the growing demand when, for the past two decades, a combination of legislation, underfunding, and general backlash has hindered its growth? We believe it will be through innovation that reimagines how energy is created, stored, and delivered. Everybody’s got an opinion about energy. We wrote ours down years ago — and signed our name to it. Here’s how it aged.

In May 2026, the committee that hands the world its official climate scenarios did something it had ducked for ten years. It killed its own doomsday number — RCP8.5, the worst-case scenario that had quietly become the baseline behind a generation of energy policy. Nobody forced them. The scientists who built it walked it back themselves and stamped it implausible.

Read that again. The single scariest figure in the entire climate debate — the one used to justify ripping out coal plants, stranding hundreds of billions in assets, and choking an entire American industry to death — was just retired by the same people who invented it.

When the rules of the game flip that hard, you stop arguing and check the scoreboard. So let’s check it.

For a decade the smart money said coal was dead, hydrocarbons were a liability, and the grown-up move was to shrink energy demand and apologize for the rest. Frontieras looked at the identical facts and bet the other way — on nearly every call that mattered. We didn’t whisper it in a boardroom and hedge. We published it, put our name on it, and ate the ridicule when it wasn’t fashionable. The results are in. They’re not close.

We Said ESG Would Crack It. It Cracked.

When ESG was a $3.7 trillion freight train, betting against it got you laughed out of the room. We did it anyway, on logic a child could follow: you cannot win by banning the part of the market that’s winning.

Then reality showed up. Energy was the single best-performing sector in the entire S&P 500 in both 2021 and 2022 — up 54.6%, then 65.7% — at the precise moment the world was told to dump it. The University of Chicago ran more than 20,000 funds and found the top-rated “sustainable” funds didn’t beat the bottom-rated ones a single time. By 2023 the CEO of BlackRock — the loudest ESG voice on the planet — was too embarrassed to say the word out loud anymore. By 2025 the money bailed too: the first year in recorded history that sustainable funds bled net outflows, $84 billion sprinting for the exits.

We called it. The scoreboard didn’t just agree — it ran up the score.

We Said Energy Demand Would Explode. It Exploded.

The next piece of received wisdom we threw in the bin was the fairy tale that the world would simply use less energy because the right people wanted it to. That is not how civilization runs. Energy is the apex predator. Everything else in the economy is something it eats. Demand doesn’t shrink because a regulator frowns at it.

The planet burned 536 exajoules in 2020 and 592 by 2024. Fossil fuels still run roughly 87% of the world, and that number is climbing, not falling. Then came the freight train nobody in the green camp saw coming: AI. The Department of Energy now expects data centers to swallow up to 12% of America’s electricity by 2028 — relentless, round-the-clock, never-blinking demand that a solar panel physically cannot serve the moment the sun drops below the horizon. Coal keeps the lights on. FASCarbon™ keeps the machines thinking.

And every single time the grid tried it the fashionable way, it broke. Texas came four minutes from total collapse in a deep freeze. California went dark in the evenings the instant the solar quit. The lesson wasn’t subtle, and we said it out loud while it was still heresy: tear out reliable baseload power and you don’t get a clean grid. You get a blackout, and people die in it.

The Doomsday Scenario Just Got Buried

Which drags us back to RCP8.5. It was never a forecast. It was a deliberately cartoonish worst case that got smuggled in as the “business as usual” assumption behind tens of thousands of studies and a mountain of regulation. It assumed the world would burn nearly five times more coal and stack up a population number no serious demographer on Earth believes. It was a fantasy. And the research machine kept stamping out new studies built on it at roughly 25 a day, right up to the moment it died.

Now it’s in the ground. Retired. Filed under implausible by the very people who spent a decade defending it. And the entire regulatory tower built on that rotten foundation is already coming down — the EPA pulled the legal trigger that had justified twenty years of forced coal shutdowns back in February. Two pillars of the same doctrine, collapsing within months of each other.

We’re not here to tell anybody what to believe about the climate. That’s not our lane and we don’t pretend otherwise. We’re here to state the obvious: a staggering amount of money and policy got wagered on a scenario its own authors just threw away. Every quarter, the people who refused that bet look smarter.

The Market Is Waking Up

Here’s the part that should get an investor’s attention. While the old doctrine was busy collapsing, the capital markets quietly started doing the exact thing they’d refused to do for a decade: they began paying up for early-stage energy.

Look at what just happened in a matter of weeks. In April, X-energy — a next-generation nuclear company — pulled off a $1 billion IPO. In May, Fervo Energy, a geothermal developer that had been private for nine years, raised $1.89 billion in an offering it had to upsize repeatedly because demand was so heavy, then watched its stock pop more than 30% on day one and blow past a $10 billion valuation. Oklo, another advanced-nuclear name, now carries a market cap north of $11 billion. None of these companies is sitting on a mountain of earnings. What they have is proven-enough technology, a credible path to firm power, and a demand story the market finally believes.

And here is where Frontieras is different in kind, not just degree. Those names are single-shot bets on electricity. We are not. One FASForm™ facility, fed by one domestic feedstock, produces across the three sectors that actually run a modern economy: energy, industry, and agriculture.

Start with the objection everyone raises about coal, because we don’t dodge it — we erase it. The knock on thermal coal has always been its environmental footprint. FASCarbon™, the purified solid carbon FASForm produces, changes that equation entirely. Burned in a power plant, it delivers a footprint comparable to a natural gas plant — without the methane leakage that quietly undermines gas’s clean reputation at the wellhead and the pipeline. That single fact rewrites the argument. The case for ripping out coal plants was always an emissions case. Convert those boilers to FASCarbon and the emissions case evaporates, while the plant, the jobs, and the grid stability all stay exactly where they are. We’re not asking the country to tear down its baseload fleet. We’re handing it a way to keep it and clean it at the same time.

Then look at what else comes out of the same process. Our liquid fuels — ultra-low-sulfur diesel, naphtha, kerosene — are energy in the form that moves the physical world: transportation, freight, logistics, the supply chains everything else depends on. Our industrial chemicals feed the chemical-manufacturing base. And our fertilizer output lands squarely in agriculture, in a world that just watched fertilizer supply chains seize up and learned what food security actually costs. Six globally traded commodities, deep and liquid markets for every one of them, out of a single input — and that input is the cheapest, most abundant hydrocarbon on the continent, which America already owns by the quarter-trillion tons.

That’s the difference. Fervo and Oklo are selling electrons. Frontieras is selling into energy, industry, and agriculture simultaneously, with no new resource to discover and no physics left to prove. The market is hunting for companies that can solve the baseload demand story. We solve that — and three more on top of it.

We are advancing toward a public listing, and we are doing it on a foundation those headline names would envy: a proven process, a commercial facility already under development, a domestic feedstock the country has more of than anyone on Earth, and a management team that didn’t stumble into this category — it called the category years before the capital arrived. The repricing of early-stage energy is underway. The question every serious investor is now asking isn’t whether this kind of energy is valuable. Fervo and Oklo answered that. It’s which teams saw it coming early enough to be standing in the right place when the money showed up. We intend to be one of them.

This Is The Whole Point

Here’s why this matters far past bragging rights. Anybody can hold an opinion. The rare thing — the only thing actually worth watching in a management team — is being right before the crowd, and then having the nerve to build on that conviction while the whole room is still pointing and laughing.

That’s the muscle, and it’s the one most companies don’t have. We built and defended this entire thesis at the absolute bottom of the cycle — when Peabody had cratered from a $19.7 billion company to about $38 million, when ESG was still hauling in record cash, when every model on the shelf swore coal would be gone by 2030. We didn’t sprint into the wall with the herd and then claim foresight from the wreckage. We saw the wall coming and we positioned for it.

We run everything through one ruthless filter: Science, Technology, Economics, Politics. Line all four up and a technology is ready to scale. For years three of them were green and only politics was red — so the herd stampeded the other way. We knew the herd was wrong, because reality is the only thing that compounds, and reality always collects. It just did. And the company already standing in the right spot when the bill comes due is the one that wins — not the latecomer scrambling to reverse-engineer a story after the fact.

That kind of judgment isn’t luck and it isn’t timing. It’s first-principles thinking applied relentlessly, on the record, for years, with our name attached to every word. That’s the asset underneath the asset.

And We Were Building The Whole Time

None of this lived on paper. We’ve already begun site preparation in Mason County, West Virginia, while we finish engineering and advance toward full construction — and on April 2, 2026, we broke ground on the site with the governor, U.S. senators, and the state coal association standing on the dirt with us.

That’s the part you cannot fake in an essay. The world is crowded with people who called the energy turn after it was obvious. We called it early, signed our name to it, and were already clearing ground while the rest of the market was still catching up to a thesis we’d published years earlier. The doctrine that declared this asset dead is being dismantled in real time — scenario by scenario, rule by rule — and we’re still right here, still building, delivering on the only promise that has ever mattered: abundant, affordable, available energy for all.

Today’s economy is very different than it was when we entered COVID19 protocols.

Many across the globe anticipated a general slowdown of purchasing goods and services during COVID. What we saw during this unprecedented time was an accelerated adoption of ecommerce, a nation held up with government subsidies and a shrinking workforce. Now, as the U.S. and the rest of the globe emerge out of lockdown, we are seeing the impact of labor shortages, rising inflation and the shortcomings of bad government policies that have hindered production of key energy resources.

Today, the impact of rising costs is felt by all of us. At the core of this inflation pattern is the lack of abundant, available, and affordable fuel. In relation to the economy, I am speaking specifically about diesel fuel. Diesel is a core component of our global economy and its key markets, including our nation’s agriculture, industrial, and transportation networks.

According to Department of Energy figures, the price per gallon of diesel has reached record highs of $5.62 per gallon. On the East Coast, it is even higher at $5.90, up 63% from the beginning of this year. The ongoing increase of diesel prices since the beginning of the year has placed a massive strain on America’s $800 billion trucking industry.

Fuel shortages and cost increases are nothing new in our history of energy, however that doesn’t change the fact that it is painful to our economy. It is being compounded by the shortages in inventory caused by policies that have shut down many of the plants necessary to produce diesel, as well as the reliance of poorly located fuel sources. With the East Coast in focus, below are several key facts to consider with today’s diesel dilemma:

According to DOE, the East Coast is more than 10 million barrels shy of the 62 million barrels of diesel it typically stores during the month of May.
The East Coast has seven refineries. This number is half of what it was just 15 years ago and reduces the region’s oil processing capacity to just 818,000 barrels per day, down from 1.64 million barrels per day in 2009.
Colonial Pipeline is a main artery for transporting oil between the Gulf of Mexico and the East Coast. On its best day, it requires 18 days for the gas to travel from its source in Houston to New Jersey. If you combine that with the fact that it has been subjected to ransomware attacks, the pipeline is not an efficient, reliable resource.
America’s support for EMEA’s independence from Russia’s oil is diverting crude oil abroad and depleting the national supply.
According to logistics firm FreightWaves’s CEO Craig Fuller in a recent tweet, "3 very large fleets" are preparing for diesel pumps at fuel stations to run dry.

At BYD’s Zhengzhou factory, a new electric vehicle rolls off the line every 46 seconds. Ninety-eight percent of the welding is done by robots. A handful of human workers oversee a production complex spanning more than ten square kilometers. At Xiaomi’s Changping plant outside Beijing, a smartphone is finished every second. The lights are off. Nobody is on the floor.

China calls these “dark factories.” The name is literal. When machines do the work, you don’t need light. You don’t need shift changes, lunch breaks, or climate control calibrated for human comfort. You need electricity. You need it in enormous, uninterrupted quantities. And you need it to be cheap.

The numbers are staggering. The International Federation of Robotics reported in April 2026 that China installed approximately 295,000 industrial robots in 2024, representing 54 percent of every industrial robot deployed on Earth that year. China’s robot density has surged from 49 robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers in 2015 to roughly 470 per 10,000 by 2023, vaulting the country from 25th in the world to third, behind only South Korea and Singapore. The United States, by comparison, sits at 307 per 10,000, ranking eighth globally. Five years ago, the U.S. was ahead of China. That gap has not just closed. It has reversed.

And the workforce data confirms the shift is structural. According to Bloomberg, China’s manufacturing workforce fell from 115 million in 2013 to below 85 million in 2025. That is a loss of more than 30 million factory jobs, even as Chinese exports hit record highs in early 2026. The cheap labor era is not winding down. It is over. Robots ended it.

The acceleration is not slowing. China’s smartphone supply chains are now retooling to build humanoid robots. Foxconn, which replaced 60,000 workers at a single plant with automated systems, is preparing humanoid robot manufacturing lines in Vietnam. UBTech’s Walker S2 entered mass production in early 2026 with orders exceeding 800 million yuan. Morgan Stanley doubled its 2026 China humanoid robot forecast to 28,000 units. The components that go into a phone—precision motors, sensors, thermal management, lightweight structural materials—are the same components that go into a humanoid robot. China is not transitioning from one industry to another. It is extending the same supply chain into a new form factor.

This is what an industrial strategy looks like at national scale.

When The Playing Field Levels

Here is what most people miss about the robotics revolution: the technology itself is diffusing. Industrial robots are increasingly available to any manufacturer willing to invest. FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa, and a growing roster of Chinese producers sell globally. The hardware is becoming commoditized. Costs per unit have dropped steadily for a decade. The International Federation of Robotics reports the average cost of a newly installed industrial robot in some markets has fallen below $3,300.

That changes the competitive equation entirely. For forty years, the argument for manufacturing in China was labor cost. Chinese workers were cheaper. When robots do the work, the cost of the human on the line no longer determines who wins. The variable that remains is the cost of running those robots: energy.

A fully automated factory runs around the clock. It demands consistent power quality, zero tolerance for brownouts, and baseload electricity that does not depend on whether the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. Robots do not eliminate energy consumption. They concentrate it. A dark factory consumes electricity the way a data center does: constantly, predictably, and in enormous volume.

So the question becomes: where is the cheapest, most reliable electricity?

China’s average industrial power rate sits at roughly $0.088 per kilowatt-hour. The United States industrial average runs around $0.085 to $0.09 per kWh depending on the state, with pockets far cheaper. West Virginia, where Frontieras’ commercial facility is under construction, offers some of the lowest industrial electricity rates in the nation. The point is this: when it comes to energy cost, the U.S. and China are already roughly at parity. And with the right policy, the U.S. can win on energy cost outright, because we are sitting on 249.8 billion short tons of recoverable coal reserves—the largest in the world—enough to power industrial production for centuries.

The labor arbitrage that built China’s manufacturing dominance is being erased by the very robots China is deploying. What replaces it is an energy arbitrage. And on energy reserves, the United States holds the strongest hand on the planet.

The Logistics Margin Nobody Talks About

Assume, for a moment, that the United States matches China on three fronts: robotic automation, energy cost, and a competitive tax structure for manufacturers. What remains?

Geography.

A 40-foot container shipped from Shanghai to the U.S. West Coast costs $3,400 to $4,200 at current rates. To the East Coast, $4,100 to $5,000. Transit time runs 15 to 25 days to the West Coast, 25 to 35 days to the East. And those are the optimistic numbers. The Strait of Hormuz crisis, Red Sea rerouting, port congestion, and carrier capacity manipulation through blanked sailings have made transpacific shipping more volatile and more expensive than at any point in the last decade.

But the container rate is only the beginning. Every day a product spends on a ship is a day of inventory carrying cost. Industry benchmarks put annual carrying cost at 20 to 30 percent of inventory value. On a $50,000 container, that works out to roughly $34 per day. A 30-day crossing consumes over $1,000 in carrying cost per container before the goods even reach the dock. Add customs brokerage, harbor maintenance fees, drayage, and the current tariff environment—which layers 25 to 35 percent or more onto most Chinese manufactured goods through a combination of Section 301 duties and other trade measures—and the true landed cost of a Chinese import can exceed the factory-gate price by 40 percent or more.

A product manufactured in West Virginia, Ohio, or Texas has none of that. No ocean crossing. No 30-day float. No container rate. No port congestion. No tariff. No customs broker. Domestic freight from the Ohio River Valley to the Eastern Seaboard moves by rail or truck in days, not weeks, at a fraction of the cost.

That logistics spread is pure margin. And unlike labor cost or tax policy, it is permanent. You cannot legislate away the Pacific Ocean.

This is the structural advantage the reshoring conversation keeps overlooking. The debate fixates on labor cost—which robots are about to neutralize—and ignores the logistics penalty that Chinese manufacturers can never escape when selling into the American market. Every dollar saved on the factory floor in Shenzhen leaks out across six weeks of ocean transit, tariff exposure, and supply chain fragility. A robot-built product manufactured near its end market eliminates all of it.

Energy Is The Prerequisite

None of this works without energy. Abundant, reliable, affordable energy.

The reshoring thesis that dominates Washington policy circles sounds compelling on paper. Bring manufacturing home. Rebuild industrial capacity. Strengthen supply chains. But the grid cannot support it. Data centers already consume roughly 4.4 percent of U.S. electricity and are projected to hit 6.7 to 12 percent by 2028. More than 10,000 generation and storage projects, representing some 1,400 gigawatts of capacity, sit in interconnection queues waiting two to five years for grid access. The U.S. built only 322 miles of high-voltage transmission last year against a need of 5,000 miles per year.

You cannot reshore manufacturing into a grid that cannot keep the lights on for the factories we already have.

Robots run on electrons. AI runs on electrons. The industrial renaissance everyone talks about has an energy prerequisite that almost nobody is building for. The 200-plus coal-fired power plants still operating across the United States represent existing grid connections, existing water rights, existing rail access, and existing industrial zoning. They are the fastest path to baseload power at the scale reshoring demands. And the coal that feeds them costs $2 to $3 per MMBtu—a fraction of the $6 to $12 for oil and natural gas.

When we think about life, one can think about the actual creation of life made possible by the shared relationships of atoms and molecules, or one can consider the life we create while we’re here on Earth. Similar to the delicate relationship that molecules and atoms share (which my business partner and Frontieras' CTO Joe Witherspoon loves to talk about), so too is the vulnerability exposed of our “way of life” when you begin to take away basic essentials like energy.

The recent fires in Southern California that consumed more than 20 homes and forced the evacuation of more than 900 residents provide a sign of what is to come. Recently, I spoke with a colleague who had a bird‘s-eye view of just how quickly those fires escalated… from a single plume of smoke to the devastation that quickly followed. The fires encapsulate for Californians the challenges summer presents as the state is facing another drought, rolling blackouts, a failing power grid, and a horrible climate policy that’s left the state vulnerable to severe energy shortages. These challenges are in the face of the nation’s rising inflation, energy costs, and continual supply chain issues.

California is having trouble keeping the lights on as it rapidly scales the use of intermittent solar and wind power. According to a recent article in Reuters, California officials forecast a potential shortfall of 1,700 megawatts this year, a number that could go as high as 5,000 MW if the grid is taxed by multiple challenges that reduce available power while sending demand soaring. Specific highlights that were revealed during the online briefing include:

Supply gaps could leave between 1 million and 4 million people without power.
Outages will only happen under extreme conditions and will depend in part on the success of conservation measures.
In 2025, the state will still have a capacity shortfall of about 1,800 MW. This according to officials from the California Energy Commission, Public Utilities Commission, California Independent System Operator and Newsom's office.
California also projected annual electricity rate increases of between 4% and 9% between now and 2025.

Karen Douglas, an adviser to California Governor Gavin Newsom, said during the briefing, "We are in a place now where we have to factor in a new landscape in terms of the challenge in front of us with bringing the projects that we need online."

Douglas is referring of course to the green projects and initiatives adopted by California. These policies overreached in an attempt to accelerate California’s green agenda and are now proving to be incapable of supporting the energy needs of the state. This is incapsulated in two actions occurring late last year, including California’s request for an emergency order from the U.S. federal government to maintain system reliability by, among other actions, loosening pollution restrictions and allowing the state to require certain fossil fuel plants scheduled to retire to stay online. California also proposed the building of several temporary natural gas plants to avoid blackouts, even as the state shuts down the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, which produces more zero-carbon electricity than all the state’s wind turbines combined. California is not alone; however, it is one of the most aggressive states to jump on the green bandwagon without considering the consequences and outlying factors. For instance, California’s ongoing drought has decimated its supply of hydropower from key water sources.

Make no mistake about it -- the relationship between energy and our way of life is intertwined. The consequences of our actions have led us to this place, and unless we embrace all types of new technologies, we are going to struggle for the foreseeable future. The nation’s power grid is under stress, gas and diesel prices continue to rise, renewable energy is not reliable (i.e. wind, solar and hydro) and the world is recognizing the impact that bad policies have on allowing us to grow as a society, feed a growing population and innovate across a wide spectrum of industries. The departure from hydrocarbons as an energy source has the potential to decimate our economy, prohibit our ability to deliver reliable energy and could leave millions vulnerable.

How I Read The World

Since I was a child, I have always wanted to know where things started.

My father held a bachelor's degree in philosophy, and he raised me almost entirely through the Socratic method. I would ask him a question, and he would answer with a question. It was maddening at first, and then it was formative. By the time I was eleven or twelve years old, I had developed something close to the conviction that I could parent myself, because I was already asking questions my parents did not particularly want to talk about. I had to find the answers on my own. So I learned to.

He passed away eighteen years ago, when I was thirty-nine. He spent his career in insurance and real estate, and alongside that work he gave decades of his life to Christian ministry, much of it aimed at high school youth. He was also a remarkable coach across several different sports, and his coaching philosophy was a small portrait of how he thought about everything. He played every kid on the team. He refused to win by riding his best players and benching the rest, because the experience of the kids on the bench mattered to him as much as the score. So he built systems and rotations and strategies that made every player a contributor, and his teams were highly competitive anyway. He understood, intuitively, that real victory is structural — that you do not have to sacrifice the people the win is supposed to be for in order to get the win.

When I spoke at his funeral, the church was standing room only, with the crowd reaching all the way out the back door. To this day, when I am working through a hard problem, I will sometimes pose the question to him in my mind and wait to hear how he would answer it. He is one of the most reliable thinking partners I have ever had, and he has been gone almost two decades.

That habit of mind never left me. When something is wrong with the world, I do not start with the symptom. I start with the source. I want to know who set it in motion, when, with what intent, and through what doctrine. Most problems in public life look incomprehensible at the surface and become obvious the moment you trace them back to their origin.

The fertilizer crisis on American farms this spring is one of those problems. Read it as a supply shock and it makes no sense — too many lines converge, too many decisions stack on top of each other, too many institutions act against the country's own interest. Trace it back to the source, however, and the entire picture clarifies. The fertilizer crisis is not the story. The fertilizer crisis is the visible tip of a strategy that has been running, in plain view, for more than half a century.

The doctrine has names. Sun Tzu's The Art of War, written roughly 500 BCE. The Thirty-Six Stratagems, distilled during China's Warring States period. And in our own time, Michael Pillsbury's The Hundred-Year Marathon — the 2015 book in which a Mandarin-speaking national security adviser to five U.S. administrations laid out what he had spent his career trying to warn Washington about. Pillsbury was once what he calls a “Panda hugger.” He read the documents, listened to the defectors, and changed his mind. His thesis is direct: since 1949, China has been executing a hundred-year plan to displace the United States as the world's dominant power by 2049 — the centennial of the People's Republic — and the strategic culture driving that plan is not the Marxism Washington thinks it is. It is the Warring States.

Once you see it through that lens, you cannot un-see it. And what becomes obvious is that the takedown of the American coal fleet was not an environmental policy outcome. It was a stratagem.

The Three Operating Principles

Western strategy is largely Clausewitzian. It treats war as the continuation of politics by other means, organized around the decisive battle. Chinese strategic culture is older and operates on different premises. Three of those premises are worth understanding, because together they explain everything that has happened to American industry over the last four decades.

The first is Sun Tzu's most famous line: the supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. The objective is not the battle. The objective is the result the battle would have produced — achieved more cheaply, more quietly, and without the enemy realizing a contest was underway.

The second is the principle that runs through the Thirty-Six Stratagems and that Pillsbury identifies as the operating logic of the modern Chinese state: defeat a more powerful opponent by using the opponent's own strength against him, without his knowing he is even in a contest. American philanthropy, American open courts, American free press, American academic institutions, American federal grant programs — all of these are sources of national strength when used by Americans for American purposes. They become weapons when an adversary learns to operate inside them.

The third is patience. The Western corporate planning horizon is a quarter. The Western political planning horizon is an election cycle. The Chinese planning horizon, as Pillsbury documents, is generations. The hundred-year marathon is not a metaphor. It is policy. The Chinese strategists who designed this campaign understood that time itself, if you have enough of it, becomes the decisive weapon. The country that thinks in centuries will always defeat the country that thinks in fiscal years.

Hold those three principles in mind — win without fighting, turn the opponent's strength against him, and run the clock — and look again at the last forty years of American coal policy.

The Stratagem, In The Open

The United States is the Saudi Arabia of coal. We hold 249.8 billion short tons of recoverable reserves — the largest endowment of any country on earth, enough to sustain production for more than 250 years at current rates. China holds significantly less coal in the ground than we do, and the quality of the Chinese resource is, on average, inferior.

And yet, since 2010, the United States has retired more than 290 coal-fired power plants and cut its coal-fired generation roughly in half. China, over the same period, brought online so much new coal-fired capacity that its fleet today — approximately 1,195 plants — is larger than the entire American electricity-generation fleet across every fuel type combined. In 2024, global coal-fired electricity generation set an all-time record of 10,700 terawatt-hours, and the United States produced just 6.2 percent of it.

That is not an environmental outcome. That is an industrial migration, completed deliberately, while Americans applauded.

How did it happen? The documented record is more revealing than most Americans realize. Between 2007 and 2012, Aubrey McClendon — the CEO of Chesapeake Energy, a natural gas company — funneled $26 million to the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign. His motivation was not environmental. He was using a green-branded NGO to eliminate his competition and grow demand for natural gas. The Sierra Club later acknowledged the funding. McClendon's role has been public record since 2012.

That was the opening move. The principle is straight from Sun Tzu: get your enemy to attack itself for reasons that sound principled. McClendon was not Chinese, but he proved the playbook worked.

Then came the operators who were actually positioned to benefit. Energy Foundation China — a Beijing-headquartered organization whose leadership has included former senior officials of the Chinese government, including a CEO who previously served as deputy director general of China's National Center for Climate Change Strategy — has funneled millions of dollars over more than a decade to American environmental organizations whose core campaign work targeted the phase-out of U.S. coal. The Natural Resources Defense Council. The Rocky Mountain Institute. Others. The flows are documented in public tax filings. Congressional investigations have examined them.

The pattern is clear in retrospect. While China was building 1,195 coal plants at home and constructing the largest coal-to-chemicals industry in human history, organizations indirectly tied to Beijing were funding the campaign to shut down the equivalent industries here. That is not environmentalism. That is the Thirty-Six Stratagems. Specifically, it is “cross the sea in full view” — execute the operation openly, in plain sight, because the target will mistake the activity for something other than what it is.

The receipts are not hidden. They have been published in court filings, congressional reports, IRS Form 990s, and investigative journalism for more than a decade. The reason this looks like a conspiracy theory is that no one in Washington wanted to look at it as a strategy.

The Asymmetry That Decided The War

The genius of the stratagem is not what it took from us. It is what it gave them.

By the time the United States had retired its coal-fired baseload generation, the global economy was entering the AI compute revolution. NERC — the North American Electric Reliability Corporation — now projects U.S. summer peak demand growth of 224 gigawatts and winter peak demand growth of 245 gigawatts over the next decade, the highest compound growth rates since the agency began tracking demand in 1995. We retired our dispatchable baseload precisely as the demand for dispatchable baseload exploded.

China did the opposite. China is now sitting on the largest firm-power surplus of any economy on earth, at the exact moment that AI, advanced manufacturing, robotics, and defense industrial capacity all became electricity-bound. They built the grid we dismantled.

Coal-derived chemicals tell the same story. Today, roughly 78 percent of China's urea fertilizer is produced from coal via gasification — not from natural gas, which is how most of the rest of the world produces it. Chinese farmers do not depend on the Strait of Hormuz. American farmers do. This spring, the Strait of Hormuz crisis pushed urea prices up roughly 70 percent in three weeks, and an American Farm Bureau survey of nearly 5,700 farmers found that roughly 70 percent of them could not afford all the fertilizer they needed for the 2026 crop year. Many switched from corn to soybeans not because the market told them to but because they could not afford to put nitrogen in the ground.

While that crisis was unfolding on American farms, Chinese farmers were untouched, because China refused to abandon the resource we were convinced to abandon. The fertilizer they spread on their fields this spring came from the same kind of coal that sits, unworked, under West Virginia and Wyoming.

This is the asymmetry Sun Tzu would recognize. The Chinese strategists did not have to beat the United States in a war. They had to convince the United States to disarm itself in a sector that no shooting war could have touched. Pillsbury's exact phrase, drawn from the Thirty-Six Stratagems: defeat a more powerful opponent by using the opponent's own strength against him, without his knowing he is even in a contest.

We were in a contest. We did not know we were in a contest. And while we were not looking, we lost forty years of industrial ground.

The Counter-Move At Mason County

A strategy this large cannot be unwound with policy alone. Executive orders help. Tariffs help. Permitting reform helps. But the only thing that actually closes the strategic gap is building. Building on American soil, with American resources, with American workers, on a timeline measured in months, not decades.

That is what we broke ground on at Mason County, West Virginia on April 2, 2026.

The $850 million FASForm™ commercial facility on those 183 acres is the first installation of a technology that does to coal what a modern petroleum refinery does to crude. We do not burn it. We fractionate it at the molecular level into six revenue-generating product streams: diesel, naphtha, hydrogen, purified solid carbon (FASCarbon™), industrial chemicals, and — through the Witherspoon Method, patent pending with the United States Patent and Trademark Office — ammonium sulfate fertilizer. At nameplate capacity, the Mason County facility will produce 135,000 tons of fertilizer per year. Domestic coal. American soil. No Strait of Hormuz. No Chinese export quota. No foreign chokepoint.

That is the standalone facility. The horizontal opportunity is larger. FASGEN™ — our co-located platform for modernizing existing coal-fired power plants — is designed to be deployed across the 200+ U.S. coal plants still operating. Each FASGEN installation eliminates the conventional emissions liabilities that doomed the previous generation of coal plants — flue gas desulfurization scrubbers, coal combustion residual ponds, EPA CCR exposure — while converting the plant into a multi-product facility that produces the same fuels, chemicals, and fertilizers China has been producing from coal for two decades. The fleet does not have to be retired. It has to be modernized.

The strategic point is this: the United States does not need to copy China's coal industry. It needs to leapfrog it. FASForm is a generational step beyond Chinese coal gasification — higher product yield, lower waste profile, broader revenue diversification, structurally lower carbon intensity per unit of output. We are not trying to catch up to 1995-era Chinese chemistry. We are trying to make 1995-era Chinese chemistry obsolete.

This is what asymmetric counter-strategy looks like in practice. The adversary is built for a long, slow march. We are built to compress decades of buildout into years, because our doctrine, our capital markets, and our engineering culture can do that when the political conditions allow it. The political conditions, for the first time in forty years, allow it.

Time, Resource, Will

The Chinese strategists understood three things that American policy did not. Time is the most decisive weapon in any contest of nations. Resource sovereignty is the foundation of every other kind of sovereignty. And the will to use both is what finally decides who wins.

They had the time. We had the resource. The question, for forty years, was the will.

That question is being answered. The Endangerment Finding was rescinded in February. The federal government has restored coal's place as essential infrastructure. The DOE has redirected modernization capital to West Virginia plants. The American Farm Bureau has put the fertilizer crisis on the national agenda. Mason County is under construction. The 183 acres where we broke ground was a working soybean farm until the moment we needed the site, and we let the farmer plant and harvest through four growing cycles while we held it under contract — because the farm does not end at Mason County. It expands from it.

The Strait of Hormuz crisis has exposed a deliberate strategic vulnerability. American farmers cannot fertilize their fields because we were talked out of our own resources — by a natural gas CEO, by foundations with ties to Beijing, and by a political class that mistook dependency for virtue.

Right now, American farmers are staring down a crisis that most of Washington is pretending is an act of God.

The conflict in the Strait of Hormuz has effectively bottled up close to half the world’s urea exports. Urea — the nitrogen fertilizer that feeds corn, wheat, and the majority of row crops across this country — has spiked roughly 70% in price since February. An American Farm Bureau survey of nearly 5,700 farmers found that approximately 70% could not afford all the fertilizer they needed for the 2026 growing season. Farmers from Kansas to Indiana are switching from corn to soybeans — not because the market told them to, but because corn requires too much nitrogen and they simply cannot afford to put it in the ground.

Even after the Strait of Hormuz reopens, experts say it will likely take months to straighten out the fertilizer supply chain. Analysts project that under the most likely scenario, urea prices stay above $700 per short ton through November 2026. Some analysts believe elevated prices will linger into the spring of 2027.

This is not a supply chain problem. This is what strategic dependency looks like when the bill finally comes due.

China Is Sitting Pretty — and Here’s Why

While American farmers are making impossible choices at the planting line, China’s farmers are fine. Fully stocked. Undisturbed.

The reason is a decision China made decades ago that the United States — the most coal-rich nation on earth — refused to make for itself.

Whereas other big exporters of urea, including Russia, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, use natural gas to produce it, approximately 78% of China’s urea output is produced with coal, a relatively cheap resource it has in abundance. China gasifies coal into synthesis gas — a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide — processes it through ammonia synthesis, and converts it into urea at domestic prices so low they are effectively insulated from global market shocks. China’s industrial route for urea is completely different from that of other countries, and it is naturally immune to the oil crisis.

China made a strategic decision: use your most abundant domestic resource to feed your people, and never let a foreign chokepoint hold your agriculture hostage.

Now consider the irony. China shipped more than $13 billion in fertilizer last year and has been a major supplier to global markets. A meaningful share of the fertilizer that has flowed into American agriculture over recent years was not made from natural gas. It was made from Chinese coal. The country that spent years telling the world it was moving beyond fossil fuels was quietly feeding American farms with the product of coal gasification — and the United States, holding the largest recoverable coal reserves on the planet, paid for the privilege.

China has now placed strict quota management and export controls on urea, effective 2026. The drawbridge is up. And American farmers are finding out what it means to have outsourced your food security to a geopolitical competitor.

We Had the Resource. We Abandoned It.

The United States holds approximately 249.8 billion short tons of recoverable coal reserves — the largest in the world, enough to sustain production for 250 years at current rates. We are, by any measure, the Saudi Arabia of coal. We have always been.

So how did the most coal-rich nation on earth arrive at a moment where our farmers cannot fertilize their fields because a conflict half a world away disrupted a shipping lane?

The answer is not geological. It is not economic. It is political — and the politics were manufactured.

Starting in the mid-2000s, a coordinated campaign to eliminate coal from the American energy mix accelerated dramatically. The Beyond Coal campaign, run by the Sierra Club, became one of the most effective industrial demolition projects in American history — claiming credit for blocking more than 160 new coal plants and accelerating the closure of dozens of operating ones.

What the Sierra Club did not tell its members — at least not voluntarily — was where a significant portion of the funding for that campaign came from.

Between 2007 and 2012, Aubrey McClendon — CEO of Chesapeake Energy, one of the largest natural gas companies in the United States — and his associates contributed around $26 million to the Sierra Club to oppose the building of new coal-fired power plants. McClendon’s motivations were hardly pure. He knew that preventing new coal plants meant more demand for his company’s product, natural gas.

The Sierra Club accepted the money secretly, under former executive director Carl Pope, and did not disclose the arrangement. The Club ultimately turned down an additional $30 million in promised donations only after the new executive director learned of the arrangement in 2010 and the story became public in 2012.

Let that settle for a moment. A natural gas company paid tens of millions of dollars to an environmental organization to destroy its primary competitor. The environmental organization took the money. And American coal policy was shaped — in part — by that transaction.

That is greed wearing the costume of idealism. It is also, as we now know, a model that was being replicated with far more strategic intent from a very different direction.

Follow the Money — Beijing’s Hand in American Energy Policy

The Chesapeake-Sierra Club arrangement was driven by corporate self-interest. What came next involved a foreign government’s strategic objectives — and the documented evidence deserves a clear-eyed reading.

Energy Foundation China — a nonprofit with significant operations in Beijing — wired millions of dollars to fund climate initiatives and environmental groups in the United States, according to tax filings. Its CEO and President, Ji Zou, previously served as the deputy director general of China’s National Center for Climate Change Strategy, an agency within the Chinese government’s National Development and Reform Commission. Other senior leaders at the organization include former officials of the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau and the Chinese Academy of Sciences — a leading state-run research institution.

According to tax filings, Energy Foundation China contributed $3.8 million to initiatives in the U.S. specifically targeting the phase-out of coal and the electrification of transportation. Among the recipients: the Natural Resources Defense Council, which has filed dozens of legal challenges opposing domestic fossil fuel drilling, coal plants, the Keystone XL oil pipeline, and critical mineral mining projects.

The San Francisco-based Energy Foundation has disbursed over $330 million to U.S. registered organizations, with funding provided by major American foundations including the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The Rocky Mountain Institute, another prominent recipient, co-authored a report with the Chinese government in 2013 arguing for a transition away from oil and gas toward an economy more dependent on energy sources where China holds dominant supply-chain positions.

China’s greenhouse gas emissions are double those of the United States, while Chinese institutions lead the world in financing new fossil fuel developments globally. China was building coal plants at home while funding organizations that were shutting them down here. That is not environmentalism. That is strategy.

Policy analysts have argued that China’s support of green energy — both domestically and abroad — is part of a broader strategy to transform its energy resource vulnerabilities into a net advantage. A transition to green energy in the U.S. benefits China directly: the communist nation is dominant in solar, wind, and electric vehicle supply chains, while America enjoys structural advantages in oil, gas, and coal.

I am not claiming that every environmental activist in America is a witting agent of Chinese strategic interests. Most are not. Most are sincere. But sincerity does not change the outcome. Whether the anti-coal movement was driven by ideology, greed, or foreign strategic calculation — or all three simultaneously — the result is the same: American coal policy was shaped by interests that were not American farmers’ interests. Not American energy workers’ interests. Not American national security interests.

And right now, at planting season 2026, American farmers are paying for it.

The Answer Is Already in the Ground

Here is what I know to be true, because we built it.

Coal does not have to be burned to be useful. It does not have to generate emissions to generate value. The FASForm™ Solid Carbon Fractionation process, developed by our co-founder and CTO Joe Witherspoon, does not combust coal. It disassembles it — thermally fractionating solid hydrocarbons into a portfolio of high-value outputs without combustion and without waste.

One of those outputs is ammonium sulfate fertilizer, produced through the Witherspoon Method™ — a patent-pending process that captures volatile byproducts from the fractionation process and converts them into agricultural-grade fertilizer at significantly lower production costs than conventional methods. At nameplate capacity, our first commercial facility will produce 135,000 tons of ammonium sulfate fertilizer annually. That is domestic fertilizer, made from domestic coal, on American soil, for American farmers. No Strait of Hormuz. No Chinese export quotas. No foreign government with a lever on our food supply.

That facility is now under construction in Mason County, West Virginia.

There is a detail about that site I want to share, because it captures something about this moment that I find clarifying.

The 183 acres in Mason County where we broke ground on April 2, 2026, were a working soybean farm until the day construction began. We held that property under contract for four growing cycles while completing our feasibility engineering and due diligence. We made a deliberate choice: let the land keep producing. Keep the farmer farming. Not one season was lost.

Some in the press still framed our arrival as a disruption to agriculture — as if we had paved over a family farm in the name of industry. They had it exactly backwards. We protected that farm while we built the thing that will feed more farms — a fertilizer plant powered by West Virginia coal, producing domestic ammonium sulfate for growers in West Virginia, neighboring states, across North America, and eventually around the world. The farm didn’t end at Mason County. It expands from it.

The Question That Demands an Answer

China has known for decades that coal is not just an energy source. It is a feedstock. A strategic asset. A sovereign resource that, if properly utilized, provides food security, energy security, and industrial independence simultaneously. They made that choice deliberately. They protected their farmers. They used their coal.

We had the same resource — more of it, in fact — and we chose to walk away from it. The campaign to make us do so was funded by a natural gas CEO who wanted to eliminate a competitor, by foundations with documented ties to Chinese government officials, and by a political class that confused virtue signaling with national strategy.

The result is 2026: American farmers who cannot fertilize. A food supply exposed to a chokepoint we do not control. And a nation slowly waking up to what it cost to be talked out of its own inheritance.

The good news — the only good news in this story — is that the resource is still here. The technology now exists to use it cleanly, efficiently, and profitably, without combustion, without waste, and without apology. We do not need to copy China’s model. We need to surpass it.

That is the work underway in Mason County.

FASForm™ was not designed to be small. It was designed to be big.

That is the answer I gave during a recent due diligence session with one of the world’s largest asset managers, when their team asked the question every institutional investor in energy eventually asks: Can the technology scale? It is a fair question, and it is the wrong question. Or rather, it is a question shaped by the wrong assumption. The assumption is that FASForm™ is a piece of laboratory chemistry that has to be enlarged, hardened, and stress-tested before it can survive commercial reality. That assumption applies to most of what passes for energy innovation today. It does not apply to us.

The hardest engineering problem we ever faced was the inverse of the one most pilot-stage technologies confront. We were not asked to scale a beaker up to a barrel. We were asked to shrink an industrial-scale process down to a test footprint without breaking the integrated continuity that makes the economics work in the first place. That is a different discipline. It is a harder one. And it is the reason Mason County is now under construction.

What “Scaling” Usually Means

When most energy companies talk about scaling a pilot technology, they are describing a leap of faith. A reaction works at the bench. The chemistry is elegant. The yields are promising. Then, the process meets industrial reality, and the elegance evaporates. Vessel geometry changes residence times. Heat transfer behaves differently at volume. Contaminants in commercial-grade feedstock attack catalysts that performed beautifully on purified samples. Materials handling, which seemed trivial at the bench, becomes the binding constraint. The energy industry’s history is a graveyard of laboratory wins that never survived the journey to a commercial unit.

This is the reason coal-to-liquids technologies built on Fischer-Tropsch chemistry have struggled for a century. The reaction works. The economics, at scale, almost never do — because the gap between bench performance and industrial throughput is wider than the inventors anticipated, and bridging it requires capital and chemistry the original design did not contemplate.

We did not approach FASForm™ this way. We could not have, given who designed it.

Who Designed It and Why That Matters

Joe Witherspoon, my co-founder and Frontieras’ Chief Technology Officer, is a licensed Professional Engineer with a Chemical and Fuels Engineering degree from the University of Utah and a career spent inside the operating units of America’s largest refining and gas-processing companies. Chevron. Enterprise Products. Sinclair Oil. Marathon Petroleum. Joe spent decades, not theorizing about industrial process engineering, but designing, modifying, and running the exact unit operations he would later integrate into FASForm™.

That biographical fact is the answer to the scalability question.

When Joe began working on solid carbon fractionation, he did not begin where chemists begin. He began where refinery process engineers begin: with the equipment. Distillation columns. Hydrotreaters. Sulfur recovery units. Gas handling and conditioning. Materials transport and feed preparation. These are not exotic technologies. They are the workhorses of the modern energy economy, deployed in thousands of facilities across North America and refined over more than a century of commercial operation. Joe knew them the way a master mechanic knows an engine. He had built and run them in environments where mistakes cost lives and capital.

What Joe brought to FASForm™ was the curiosity and the innovative imagination of a true technologist, riding on top of deep operational expertise. That combination is rare. Most innovators in energy are either brilliant chemists who do not know how a refinery behaves, or experienced operators who lack the imagination to see beyond the configuration in front of them. Joe is both. He could ask the question that defines FASForm™ — what if you disassembled coal at the molecular level using a sequence of unit operations that already exist, integrated in a way no one has integrated them before?— and answer it with engineering that real construction companies can build.

That is what the Frontier Applied Sciences years were. From 2010 forward, more than 60,000 man-hours of engineering work, leading to U.S. Patent No. 9,926,492 granted in 2018 and patent protection across five continents. None of that work was a search for whether the chemistry was real. The chemistry was always real. The work was the disciplined integration of proven unit operations into a continuous, closed-loop, zero-waste system that produces refined fuels, purified solid carbon, hydrogen, fertilizer, and industrial chemicals from a single feedstock.

We did not invent the equipment. We invented the architecture.

The Inverted Engineering Problem

When the time came to validate FASForm™ at pilot scale, we faced a problem most innovators never have to solve because we had a process designed from the start for industrial throughput. The thermodynamics, the residence times, the integration of streams between units — all of it was conceived for commercial operation. Shrinking that down to a test footprint without losing the integrated continuity that makes the system work was a serious engineering exercise.

A pilot unit is not a small version of a commercial plant. It is a careful instrumentation of the parts of the process you most need to validate, configured to produce data that translates back to commercial conditions. In our case, that meant proving the disassembly chemistry, the recovery of products at the right purities, the closure of the loop, and the behavior of the integrated whole when reduced in scale. We ran the unit for twelve months. We captured the data. Independent laboratories verified the outputs. The engineering report from JIS confirmed what we had designed for. The pilot did not teach us whether FASForm™ works. It documented, for the people who needed documentation, that it does.

That is what validation looks like for a technology built around proven equipment. It is not a leap. It is a confirmation.

Why Mason County Is Under Construction

There is a reason the partner roster on Mason County reads the way it does. Joe is serving as Project Director, and he has assembled a collection of specialist engineering firms to execute the current phase of engineering work, each chosen for the specific unit operations and disciplines they have built and operated for decades. KBC and Yokogawa are integrated into the design and controls work. Topsoe is licensing the hydrotreater and sulfuric acid plant. CAMS, managing more than $20 billion in industrial assets for clients including ExxonMobil, GE, JPMorgan, and Blackstone, has signed on for operations and maintenance.

None of those firms are being asked to scale unproven chemistry. None of them are taking invention risk. They are being asked to do what they have each done hundreds of times across the global energy sector — engineer, license, build, and operate process units they know intimately — in a configuration that Frontieras has spent fifteen years engineering, patenting, and validating. Their willingness to commit reputation and capital to this project is itself a form of validation. Companies of that stature do not attach their names to science experiments. They attach their names to industrial work they understand.

Mason County is not a demonstration project. Rather, it is the first commercial deployment of a technology that was always designed for commercial deployment.

The Bigger Point

The energy industry has spent the last twenty years confusing motion with progress. Billions of dollars have been deployed into technologies that worked in a press release and never worked in a plant. Investors have learned, the hard way, that pilot data does not always translate. Promising chemistry does not always survive industrial reality. Subsidies do not turn a bad design into a good one.

What we built at Frontieras, and what Joe Witherspoon engineered over fifteen years at Frontier Applied Sciences, is something different. It is a process designed from the first sketch to operate at the scale of a working refinery, using the equipment that working refineries already use, configured in a way that no one has configured it before. The science was proven by integration, not by leap. The validation was confirmation, not discovery. The hardest part of the engineering was making it small enough to test.

That is the answer to the scalability question. FASForm™ does not need to be scaled up. It needs to be built. And it is being built…in Mason County, on a 184-acre site, with the partners and the capital and the engineering already in place.

Abundant, affordable, and available energy for all. That is the mission. The technology to deliver it has already been designed. The work in front of us is execution.
